Expectations:
That you will attend all classes. If you must miss class because of illness, athletics, or emergency, call me to find out what you missed and how you can catch up. If you miss more than 20% of scheduled classes (6 classes), you will not pass the course.
Read all assignments by the assigned date. Come to class prepared to discuss, answer questions, or write about the readings. You’ll find this easier if you make note of the ideas, observations, objections, or questions you had when you were reading. Expect a short quiz on the assigned readings.
Write, edit, proofread, and print out all writing assignments by the assigned date. If you get behind, let me know how I can help you catch up. If you do not keep up with the class, you may not pass the course.
Make timely conference appointments and keep them. Not being prepared or not showing up for a scheduled conference counts as three absences. See first point above.
Take responsibility for your learning.

Responses to Readings: We will begin the semester with your preparing and handing in a 1-2 page response to each day’s readings. These will help you with the class discussion. Students who contribute actively to the discussions may (with permission) dispense with the written commentary.
Papers: There will be three short papers in this class. The first is the Gossip Paper, or "What are they saying about X?" You will pick any author from the reading list and using the MLA Bibliography (on-line or otherwise) plus other references, tell your readers what 5-10 critics have said about your author’s work.
The second and third papers will be critical papers for which there are student models in The Making of a Southerner, Ode To Friendship (Ref. PS615.A206), and Tropical Landscape (available in Wesleyan's Library) and professional models in the articles you read as part of the Gossip Paper.
ENG 271: These papers must be a minimum of 1200 words and have a Works Cited/Consulted list of at least four entries. A computer word count is required.
ENG 371: These papers must be a minimum of 1500 words and have a Works Cited/Consulted list of at least six entries. A computer word count is required.
