Edit a Page

For the most part, you are going to be updating content on existing pages rather than creating new pages.

If you have selected the page you are interested in editing, click on the Edit Page button located in the upper left area of the tool bar.

When you click on Edit Page, Contribute will download a draft of the page to your local computer.  You are not actually working on the live copy that is on the web server.  In addition, Contribute will lock out the file so that only you may edit the page while you are working on it.

You are now in edit mode.  The toolbar changes to give you tools that you need to edit your pages (Figure 5).  If you are on a computer with 800x600, it is a good idea to collapse the side bar.

The webpage that you see will now look quite different.

You’ll notice that the top portion of the webpage is now missing.  There is no need for concern.  The top portion of the website, or header, is the same throughout the entire website.  It is saved as an include file on the webserver.  What that means is there is a single file that, when a web page is called from a browser, is pulled into the page.  Since you are in edit mode, Contribute does not put the include files into the page.  This also includes the footer which contains the page modification date and copyright dates and the section level navigation (the left menu).  Once you publish your changes and you are back in browser mode, you will see the page in full.

You’ll notice green boxes that appear around certain areas of the page. These are the areas that you have access to edit.  Let’s take a look at the different sections.

Page Title

Here you will type the title of your page.  Simply highlight the title and type in your changes.  No font formatting is necessary.

Sidebar

The SideBar is a section where you can put additional information such as office hours, additional links, directions, and any other relevant information that you would like to pull out and highlight.

Copy
This will be the main focus of your editing.  Editing here is the same as editing in a word processing document.  You can type text, cut and paste text, drag and drop selections of text and even drag text from another application.    There are some additional editing tools that may not be in your word processing application.
