In addition to editing existing content, you can also create new pages to add to your web site.
To create a new page
- Click the New Page from the tool bar in edit mode or choose File > New Page. This will launch the New Page Dialog.
- You should see a folder labeled Templates. If it is not expanded, click the plus button to expand the templates.
- These are templates assigned to your website. Each template corresponds with a section in your website. The template names follow this naming convention:
sitename_section
For example, if you are working with Financial Aid and wish to create a page for the Tuition section, you would choose the financialaid_tuition template. - Add a page title. This is not to be confused with the Page Title you enter directly on the web page. This is the page title that will appear at the top of a browser window. Our pages follow a specific naming convention for Page titles:
VWC: Section Name: Your Site Name: Your Section name (if needed): Page name
For example, if we were creating a page to display payment options for the Tuition section of Financial aid it would appear like this:
VWC: Admissions: Financial Aid: Tuition: Payment Options - Click OK.
- This will create a blank page from the template you have chosen and lists it as a new page in the Pages panel. Edit as you would normally. If you do not have any sidebar information to add to the page, please delete the placeholder text.
- When you have completed the new page, click the publish button. If your role does not allow you to publish, you can send the page for review.
- If this page is not linked to any other page in your site, Contribute will display a warning box telling you that if the page is not linked from an existing page visitors may not be able to see it. Click yes. It is recommended that you first create the new page before linking it up. For more information on linking new pages, click here.
- Contribute will bring up the Publish New Page dialog box. Click choose Folder and pick the appropriate folder the page should be saved to. Going back to our example, if you were using the financialaid_tuition template you would save the new page to the “tuition” folder under financial aid.
- Pick a name for your filename. This is not the page title. A few naming conventions need to be followed in order for the page to display properly:
- The filename must contain only lowercase letters or numbers. No other characters (except the underscore) can appear in a file name.
- The filename cannot contain spaces. Use an underscore (_) character in place of a space.
- The file extension has to be .php If you use any other extension the webpage will not display properly.
- For example, if we published payment options to the tuition section under financial aid we would name the file: payment_options.php.
- Note: Contribute will put a default filename here using the Page Title you put in when you initially chose the template. Again, using our example the Contribute created file name would be:
VWCAdmissionsFinancialAidTuitionPaymentOptions.php
This is entirely too long.
- Once you have a filename chosen, click the Publish button.
