Frequently Asked Questions

1.  How much does the Maui trip cost, and what are the dates?

For 2013 the cost of the Maui trip is $1995.  A $250 deposit will hold a spot on the trip.   The dates for the trip are January 9-16.

2.  What's included with the Maui trip?

The Maui trip includes airfare on  a major airline, oceanfront condo accommodations, transportation to all class activities, fuel, hiking guides, surfing instruction and equipment, snorkeling, close instructor contact throughout the trip, and more.  Check the Activity Page for a schedule to get an idea of how busy you'll be!

3.  What isn't included on the Maui trip?

The only things you'll have to pay for on Maui are your souvenirs and food!  The condos include a fully equipped  kitchen and we make regular stops at the supermarket so you can prepare your own meals to keep food costs down.

4.  Does this class follow sustainable practices?

This class does the best it can to follow sustainable practices.  Some things like air and ground transportation can't be avoided.  In other instances we will do everything we can to support local products and agencies.  We also follow the principles of "Leave No Trace" in our outdoor activities to minimize environmental impact.  Also, we purchase carbon offsets when we rent vans in Maui to offset their emissions.

5.  How strenuous is the trip?

This trip will require you to be fairly active each day.  If you get winded getting up off the couch this trip probably isn't for you.  On the other hand, if you are in average shape, can hike a few miles and have a real desire to experience all that Maui has to offer you'll do fine.  Dr. Kennedy works with the group each year to insure that everyone is getting plenty of opportunity for rest to prepare for each day's activities.  If you have any concerns he'll be glad to discuss them with you.

6.  I want to lie around on the beach and stay out every night until dawn.  Is this trip for me?

NO!  Your money is better spent sitting around Virginia Beach.  This trip is for people who love the outdoors, want to explore Maui every day, and are open to new experiences.

7.  Can non-VWC students join the trip?

YES!  We've had several years when friends, spouses, family members, and other people who weren't taking the class joined us.

8.  Are the condominiums nice?

The condos where we stay are very nice.  We use two bedroom OCEANFRONT condos that feature one or two balconies, fully equipped kitchens, two bathrooms; and include access to a barbecue area, pool, spa, tennis courts, and other amenities.

9.  What ski area will we visit, and can I ski/snowboard?

We will visit the Wintergreen Resort.  After the class discussion period with resort personnel there will be time available for you to ski or snowboard if you wish.  Dr. Kennedy will help arrange for your lesson and equipment needs if you need them.  You'll also have access to the resort's spa and pool, hot tubs, and fitness centers.

10.  Will the trip to the ski area cost anything?

Not unless you decide to ski or snowboard.  We also typically receive a steep discount on the cost of rentals and lift tickets.

11.  Can I get my money back if anything prevents me from taking the class?

The airlines typically impose a significant charge for any changes or cancellations.  If this is a concern cancellation insurance is available.

12.  Should I wait until next year to take the class?

NO!  There's no guarantee from one year to the next that the class will be offered.  When the class was not offered in 2012  there were many graduating seniors who wished they had taken it earlier.

13.  I'm interested in taking the class.  How do I sign-up or get some more questions answered?

Contact Dr. Kennedy ASAP by calling him at (757) 455-3305 or e-mailing him at kennedy@vwc.edu  He'll reserve your spot in the class if one is available.  Then, a $250 deposit will allow for your airfare to be booked.

14.  Can I pick my roommates in the condo?

Dr. Kennedy will ask each person who he/she wants to share the condo with and try to make the best possible arrangements.  If you sign-up with one or more other people and want to stay together it won't be a problem at all.  So, talk to your friends and get them to sign up asap if they are interested.

15.  What's the weather in Maui like in January?

Days will usually be in the 80's and nights around 70.  Dr. Kennedy will brief everyone before departure so you pack correctly.

16.  Is this the first time for this class?

No!  Dr. Kennedy has taught a "Travel and Tourism" class at VWC for the past 18 years and arranged school trips to Maui and Mexico for over two decades.  In order to take full advantage of winter session he created this unique class that pulls from the best parts of past Maui experiences to provide an intensive course that includes memorable travel experiences.  To date, over 300 students have participated in the Maui experience with several returning for the trip the following year to repeat the activities.
