This page is about me

Background

My first career was in English Literature from the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras in Mexico's Universidad Nacional Autónoma. I later obtained a Master of Arts from The University of Northern Iowa in 1994, and a Ph.D. from The University of Iowa in 2000. In addition to these two institutions, I also taught in Wartburg College in Iowa. My dissertation was on Postmodern Spain. Minor areas I researched as a graduate student are Latin American poetry and Spanish Golden Age Literature. Currently I teach courses on Peninsular Literature, Hispanic culture, and Modern Mexico. I have written about prominent Spanish and Mexican authors, indigenous issues, and the evolving nature of Hispanic culture in the U.S. I have presented some of my work in numerous national and international conferences, as well as in the Hampton Roads area. My article “La nueva corriente revisionista del cine mexicano,” presented in Dominican Republic in December 2003 was published in the literary journal Diáspora, a literary journal edited by Southern Arkansas University. I teach abroad in Puebla, Mexico, and Mexico City for Virginia Wesleyan College summer and winter sessions.
