Course Requirements for Math 300: Math 104 Teaching Assistantship

 

(1 credit)

Assistant must complete the following to obtain one credit hour for this course:

1.         Attend each class and ARRIVE TO CLASS ON TIME EVERY DAY.

2.            Maintain a minimum of   3 hours per week at times convenient to the students for

            tutoring. (Keep a journal to document times and dates of students, along with content  discussed.)           

3.         Meet with the instructor of  the course for a weekly planning session.

4.         Grade and record daily assignments  (group work and individual homework).

5.         Go over  test corrections with each student.

6.Have experience and knowledge of the use of the TI-83 graphing calculator.

7.            Participate in the instruction of the class.

            a.            Aid students working in groups.

            b.            Aid students and assist the instructor in graphing calculator use.

            c.            Choose a topic on which to lecture individually.

8.            Conduct review sessions prior to each module test and the final exam.

9.         Go over quizzes during the first ten minutes of class with the students.

10.       Keep a record of daily assignments using a grading spreadsheet, such as Excel or Quattro Pro.

11.       Other duties agreed upon between the assistant and the instructor may be assigned.

 

 

 

EVALUATION OF THE TEACHING ASSISTANT

Since there are no exams given to the teaching assistant, much of the grading will be conducted subjectively.  Distinction between grades, A to D, will be determined by the following criteria in fulfilling the above requirements.

 

It is expected that the teaching assistant

1)         exhibit a positive attitude toward math, the students, the instructor and this course in general.

2)         provide phone number, campus E-mail address and in general be available to the students.

3)         take the initiative to carry out the above requirements of their own accord.

4)         be effective in participation in class instruction.

5)         attends class every day and arrives to class promptly.

 

Also, the instructor will evaluate the teaching techniques of the teaching assistant:

1) Each class day as the teaching assistant goes over the homework problems with the students.

2) During specified lectures taught by the teaching assistant.

(These two items are necessary to satisfy the VWC oral competency requirement.)

 

The instructor of the course will also take into consideration feedback from the students regarding the performance of the teaching assistant.  The teaching assistant may request personal conferences at any time regarding their evaluation.
