EES/CHEM 450:
Global Environmental Cycles
BIO, CHEM & EES Majors Welcome!
Our planet is comprised of a system of complex interactions among the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Elements and molecules necessary for life, such as nitrogen, carbon, and water, cycle between these reservoirs. To understand these processes on a global scale we need to integrate research from geology, biology, and chemistry. We will investigate how human impacts, including global warming, deforestation, and heavy metal pollution, impact the whole earth system. You will explore these biogeochemical cycles in laboratory sessions through field measurements, laboratory analyses, and a self-designed research project.
Corequisite: Junior/senior status with a major in sciences or consent.
