CHEM 312

Organic Chemistry II

Spring 2002

Course Syllabus

Required Text:           Organic Chemistry, 7th ed. G. Solomons & C. Fryhle, Wiley & Sons, 2000.

Optional Materials:   Study Guide to accompany Organic Chemistry, 7th ed.

Molecular model kit

Course Description:  A continuation of CHM 311 (The chemistry of carbon compounds.  A comprehensive survey of the aliphatic and aromatic compounds with emphasis on structure, properties, reactions, reaction mechanisms and stereochemistry.) with a focus on the aromatic, amine, and carbonyl functional groups.

Course Objectives:    Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Understand how aspects of structure including geometry, orbital hybridization, electronegativity, polarity, stereochemistry, and chirality affect reactivity of different functional groups
2. Understand relationship between reactivity and compound structure
3. Understand the similarities and differences between the functional groups
4. Interpret IR, mass, NMR, and UV spectra and understand spectroscopy theory
5. Understand reactions proceed via particular mechanisms
6.  Recognize the biological molecules and their characteristic functional groups
7. Recognize the application of organic chemistry in the world around them
8. Use molecular graphics and modeling software to draw and analyze compounds

Coursework:

15%  Chapter Work  A quiz will be given approximately once a week to test your understanding of the concepts of the chapter most recently completed.  Quizzes will be completed outside of class.
15%  Projects   Computer projects designed to help you visualize course concepts will be assigned periodically through the semester.
40%  Exams   Four exams assessing understanding of course material will be given in class.
15%  Final Exam  A comprehensive final exam will be given during finals week.
15%  Paper   A 5 page typed essay will be due April 18 on an organic compound that is a natural product and has significance in our society.

**       For an excused absence, the make up exam must be arranged before the class in question.  In an emergency, the student must contact me to discuss a make up exam within 24 hrs of when the exam was administered; failure to contact me within that time will relinquish my obligation to administer a make up exam.

Grading: Final letter grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

B+ 87 – 89 C+ 77 – 79 D+ 67 – 69
A   93 – 100 B   83 – 86 C   73 – 76 D   63 – 66 F < 60
A-  90 – 92   B- 80 – 82 C- 70 – 72 D- 60 – 62

 Special Accomodations:

Virginia Wesleyan College recognizes and is sensitive to the fact that some students have special needs.  Any student who has a disability that prevents the fullest expression of his or her abilities should contact Mrs. Fayne Pearson (455-3246, Learning Resource Center), the college disability services coordinator, and provide appropriate, professional documentation to register.  After registering with disability services, Mrs. Pearson will contact me to discuss the appropriate accommodations necessary to complete the course requirements.  An instructor cannot give accommodations without certification by disability services.  See p. 30 of the current Academic Bulletin for more details.
