Common name: Carambola or Star Fruit

Family: Oxalidaceae

Botanical name: Averrhoa carambola

Origin: Indonesia

Uses: Fruit eaten as a dessert.

The tartness of the fruit is the result of oxalic acid formed when the crystals of calcium oxalate in the fruit are dissolved in the salvia. The same tartness can be noted if one eats the local plant called sour grass (Oxalis spp.)
