Common name: Chinese Chestnut

Family: Fagaceae

Botanical name: Castanea mollissima

Origin: China & Korea

Uses: Nuts cooked and eaten as a vegetable or prepared as a dessert

The American chestnut (C. dentata) is no longer a major source of chestnuts because of the chestnut blight that has killed most large trees. The Spanish or Euasian chestnut (C. sativa) and the Japanese chestnut (C. crenata) are also cultivated for their nuts.
