The native range for C. bicolor is "from the Andes to coastal Brazil and north to the Guianas and the Darien region of Panama", but is naturalized elsewhere (Madison, 1981). It is a very variable species, and it has many synonyms. C. bicolor (sensu Madison) includes C. bicolor (sensu stricto), C. picturatum C. Koch, and C. marmoratum Mathieu. Some feel that this definition of the species is too broad, and these three species should be kept separate. The strict sense of the species is used here
