COURSE TITLE: Physical Activity for Children
COURSE NUMBER: REC 225
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course explores the theory's relating to the psychomotor development of children, assessment techniques and activity analysis as it relates to program planning for children. Special emphasis will be placed on teaching and leading children in physical activities and integrating special populations into general recreation programs.
COMPETENCIES:- Students will be able to describe the psychomotor developmental phases of children (7.07)
- Students will be able to compare and contrast the various theories of play. (8.01)(8.02)
- Students will become proficient at analyzing physical activities so that proper selection can be made to enhance the psycho, social, emotional, physical development of children.
- Students will learn how to assess client needs. (8.21)(7.07)
- Students will be able to develop activity and program plans. (8.16)(8.18)
- Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate activity leadership behavior.(8.18)
- Ability to analyze activity progressions.(7.07)
- Skill at various leadership styles and their use in accomplishing program objectives.(8.18)
- Knowledge of laws, legislation and ethical principles relating to the rights of special populations and general client populations.(8.12)(8.13)(8.37)
- Ability to adapt physical activities so that special populations can be integrated into programs. (8.18)
MATERIALS USED: Play and game equipment
METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: Lectures, demonstration and student practice leadership.
CLASS POLICIES:- Students are expected to come dressed to participate in physical activity.
- Assignments will be accepted up until class time on the day they are due.
- Class will have three components

- student led presentations
- demonstrations by instructor
- occasional field trips
