Other InterestsScience, Techology and SocietyI work in a philosophy department, and I generally teach philosophy courses (along with some Ancient Greek). But lots of the intellectual action is at the front line of the sciences. There's a great need for inter-disciplinary work that brings these sciences together and for courses that tackle (and teach students how to tackle) an issue from multiple approaches. See my class on Happiness Studies for an inter-disciplinary course in this area.Good sources of information about studies on science, technology, and humanity include EurekAlert, Seed, Developing Intelligence, and William Saletan's Human Nature column in Slate. All About Cities and The Creative Class Exchange concern urban development. Economics blogs include VoxEU, Economist's View, Marginal Revolution, and The Undercover Economist GardeningI have a vegetable garden on campus, right outside my building. VWC students: If you're interested in helping, or in planting your own vegetables, please get in touch.I'm a member of the CSA at New Earth Farm (and maintain its website). There's also a New Earth Blog. Fall 07: We've started an Organic Gardening Club! Please get in touch with Lan Tran (lmtran at vwc dot edu) to join.
UltimateFor a brief video explaining the game click on Ultimate 101.For a game near you, check the website of the Ultimate Players Association. VWC Students: If you are interested in getting a game going on campus, please get in touch with me! Music
I enjoy music, in particular alternative country, which expresses, um, the desire of urban-dwellers to resist the anonymity of economic atomism. Or something like that. Check out the music of AJ Roach, Tim Easton, Kathleen Edwards, Richmond Fontaine, Slaid Cleaves, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Tift Merritt, Adam Carroll.
