Walker HIST 114 -- History of the United States Since 1877 Virginia Wesleyan College TAKE-HOME MIDTERM *The Take-home midterm is due WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 11 at 6:00 PM in my mailbox outside my office door (E107) For the take home midterm you will choose THREE (3) of the topics below and write an essay of 3 pages (typed) on each one. Each essay will be graded based on clarity, quality of argument, how well you use relevant and specific evidence to support your argument, and how well you demonstrate your understanding of the historical context that shapes the topic. You should use the Tindall and Shi textbook, primary sources from the document book, and the other two books for evidence, as needed. The more specific, detailed evidence you have from a variety of sources the better. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES ARE ALLOWED! PAPER TOPICS (Pick three): 1) Most U.S. history textbooks date the end of Reconstruction to the presidential election crisis of 1877, but many African American historians might argue that Reconstruction ended years before that, or else that it really ended much later, in the 1890s. What do you think? Why? 2) In his "Frontier Thesis" (see For the Record 48-50), Frederick Jackson Turner argued that throughout U.S. history (up until 1892) American democracy had depended on western expansion. Why did he think this? Looking at the post-Civil War period, do you agree that western expansion promoted democracy in the United States? Why or why not? 3) In the late 19th century, critics referred to industrialists and financiers like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan as "robber barons," while supporters sometimes called the same men "captains of industry." Explain who, at the time, would have expressed each view and why (be as specific as possible). What do you think? Why? 4) Use the textbook to help you evaluate Bread Givers as an "accurate" fictional depiction of the immigrant experience in the turn-of-the century American city. How do the characters (pick two or three) represent conflicts between American and Eastern European Jewish culture? How do they represent the diverse ways in which immigrants could become "American"? ESSAY WRITING GUIDELINES These guidelines are basically the same as for the Ida B. Wells paper. In order to get better than C- on any essay the you must satisfactorily adhere to the style and content criteria below: Formatting: All three essays must be as close to three pages long as possible. Less than two and a half pages will be too short. I will not read much past page four pages. Essays must be double spaced with 1-inch margins and word-processed using a normal 12-point font. Please number your pages. The midterm exam must have one title page in front of all three essays with the date, the course title, my name (correctly spelled), and your name. Each essay must have an original title. Essay titles should be typed at the top of each essay. Papers must cite sources correctly. Do not include a Works Cited page. Use the footnote function on your word processing program and make sure it is set to use Arabic, not Roman, numerals. You must cite both quotes and original ideas that come from another author. Here are some examples from the first paper showing how to cite correctly: Citing the Textbook, first time: George Brown Tindall and David E. Shi, America, A Narrative History, Brief Sixth Edition, Volume Two, (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 2004) 575. Subsequent citations: Tindall and Shi, 578. Citing the Southern Horrors book for the first time: 1Ida B. Wells, "Southern Horrors. Lynch Law in all Its Phases," reprinted in Southern Horrors and Other Writings: The Anti-Lynching Campaign of Ida B. Wells, 1892-1900, (New York: Bedford St. Martin's, 1997) 61. Citing the same essay in the same book all subsequent times: 5Wells, "Southern Horrors," 169. Citing a different essay in the same book after a full cite has already been done: 7Wells, "A Red Record," 75. Citing Royster in the same book: Jacqueline Jones Royster, "Introduction" in Southern Horrors Any questions on how or whether to cite something? ASK ME! Also, you can use SourceAid (a citation guide accessible on our library web site) to help you with footnotes. Style: Papers must be free of egregious spelling and grammatical errors. Papers must introduce quotes smoothly, explaining who made the quote and why it is important. Papers must be written in an academic tone of voice. You are not writing an email to a friend. This is a scholarly paper. Avoid casual language and slang. Structure and Analytical Considerations: Your paper must contain the following components: An introductory paragraph with: Your main argument (in response to the question) in one sentence. DO NOT REWRITE THE QUESTION IN THE INTRODUCTION OR AT THE BEGINNING OF YOU PAPER! Sub-arguments that help you to further explain and support your argument. This should amount to about 2-3sentences. A brief explanation of how you will support your arguments in the rest of the paper. Think of your introduction as a "roadmap" to the rest of your paper. Body Paragraphs: You need one body paragraph for each big idea that you have in support of a sub-argument. You may need only one paragraph for a sub-argument. You may need 2 or 3. Each paragraph must: Deal with a unified idea or topic. Have a topic sentence that introduces that idea or topic. Contain specific pieces of evidence and quotes from the course readings that support your main argument or one of your sub-arguments. You must analyze your evidence, that is, explain how it supports your arguments. Conclusion: Sum up your arguments If you like, connect your paper to something bigger than, but relevant to, the paper.
